Making your UFC debut is a thrilling moment for any fighter. Ryan Jensen gets to experience that moment in the spotlight at UFC 74 on August 25th. But he can’t revel in the realization of a dream for too long, for standing on the other side of the cage will be crafty veteran Travis Lutter.
Training out of MidAmerica Martial Arts in Omaha, Nebraska, Jensen sports an 11-1 record; the only loss coming in 2005 versus Brock Larson. In May of this year Jensen submitted UFC vet Curtis Stout via triangle choke and was a precursor to getting his shot in the UFC. “Ryan is a very explosive and athletic fighter”, explains instructor and owner of MidAmerica Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone. “His game is very well rounded, he can take the fight anywhere.” 6 of his 11 wins have come via submission, half of those via triangle choke. His ground prowess will be tested against world class grappler Lutter, and his coach is confident that things will work on fine if it hits the mat. “Travis Lutter is one of the top BJJ practitioners in the world”, admits Cerrone. “Ryan’s ground game is very deceptive, he is a very smart fighter who understands how to set things up–the best BJJ can go out the window when you get punched in the mouth”
Certainly Jensen has not come out of nowhere–he began training back in 1993 with UFC 3 champion Steve Jennum. On August 25th, 14 years later, he’ll get a chance to make his own UFC history.
