St. Pierre Promises no more Mental Lapses
After being taken out by the heavy underdog in Matt Serra earlier this year to lose his welterweight title, Georges St. Pierre has had his mental game severely scrutinized. UFC president Dana White has made it clear that he feels GSP is the most talented fighter in MMA, but was weary of his mental strength after witnessing a ultra-jittery St. Pierre in the locker room prior to the Serra fight. The perturbed mental state foreshadowed the upset of the year when Serra defeated St. Pierre in round one. After his victory over Josh Koscheck last night, St. Pierre vowed never to return to such a state before a fight. “I cannot promise you that I’ll win all my fights, because nobody can do such a thing, nobody is invincible”, explains St. Pierre. “But what I can promise you is that you’ll the real GSP every single fight–the GSP who’s there 100 percent and who’s there ready to fight.”

Not too many years ago, before MMA fighters with college degrees came on the scene (and possibly due to the antics of the “professional wrestlers” in the WWF) wrestlers were not considered as being particularly bright. Now, thank heaven, with better role models such as GSP, perhaps young athletes will learn to prepare themselves to prevent ‘mental lapses’ the way GSP has and seek the help of sport psychologists without having to deal with the stigma of being crazy or weak. I think it is great to see any athlete make his way out of the dark ages where it was believed that only physical strength and not mental toughness or character could make one a
champion. Yea Georges, you are an ultimate
fighter!
