This Day in MMA History: A New Star in “Shogun” is Born at PRIDE–Final Conflict 2005

On August 28, 2005, Pride Final Conflict 2005 took place at the Saitama Super Arena. The semis of the 205 pound tourney saw Ricardo Arona defeating Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua victorious over Alistair Overeem. In the finals, “Shogun” knocked out Arona to become the tournament champion. Also on the card, the most anticipated heavyweight bout in years occurred as Fedor Emelianenko took on Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. Emelianenko secured the decision victory.

Hidehiko Yoshida defeats David “Tank” Abbott
