St. Pierre to fight Hughes for interim title

Posted 24 Nov 2007 in Georges St. Pierre, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, UFC 79

With Matt Serra having to pull out of his bout on December 29th versus Matt Hughes due to an injury, Georges St. Pierre has stepped up to take on Hughes for the interim UFC welterweight title. Other than for Serra, who is worried that he may not get a chance to fight his arch rival Hughes he is defeated by St. Pierre, the situation appears to be a positive one for all other stakeholders.

The Fans: Get to see fight that is likely one they’ll be more excited to watch.

The UFC: Now have an even more stacked end of the year card.

Hughes: Gets a shot at getting back a title.

St. Pierre: Also has a chance to regain his strap, albeit an interim one, and if he wins he can receive an opportunity to avenge his loss to Serra.

A big question however remains is how good a shape is St. Pierre in right now? He likely wasn’t expecting to fight until late winter or early spring 2008 against the winner of Serra versus Hughes. Taking the fight one about 5 weeks notice makes one wonder will St. Pierre be as in pristine condition mentally and physically for this fight.
