Q&A with Denmark’s Christoffer Volf

Christoffer Volf talks about his upcoming bout with Christian Numme at Adrenaline 2 in Denmark.
How’d you get into the sport?
I played icehockey for 16-18 years at a high level, so I have always been competitive. When I quit hockey i was looking for something to do to keep in shape. A freind of mine had started karate and made an effort to get me into karate as well. Martial arts started to appel to me, but if i was to do martial arts i wanted the best – after a quick research on the internet it was clar to me that MMA was what I was looking for. Fighting wasn’t intented when I started raining, but my competitive nature quick cauth on to me and here I am with my 4th fight after 2 years of training.
Who do you train with?
I’m training at the CSA gym in Copenhagen. Mainly with Christian Graugart and Carsten Ettrup in BJJ and MMA and Flemming Rasmussen and Kristian Bjerre in Muay thai. Beside those there’s a handful of sparring partners and team mates I work with a lot of the time.
What is the MMA scene like in Denmark?
MMA is still a small sport here but it seems like it’s catching on now. Theres about 200-250 active fighters (the population in Denmark is about 5 million), but most gyms experience growth in members so it wouldn’t surprise me if the number of fighters will double within a year or two. The number of MMA events has been about 4/year but that number is rising as well and this year will most likely have +8 events
Are Danes aware of the UFC and any North American MMA leagues?
Within the MMA community in Denmark leagues like UFC, Elite and IFL are well known, but to the average dane they wouldn’t ring a bell. However Danes will surely make themselves noticed in the crowed at UFC85 when Martin Kampmann return to the octagon.
What are your thoughts on you opponent Christian Numme and how do you see the fight going?
I know that Christian Numme has been in the game for some time and is the experienced of the two of us. He is bronze medalist of the European C-shooto tournament in 2005 and winner of a least 1 grapling turnament, so especialy his ground skills is to be taken seriously.
All of my fights up til now (3) has gone the distance. I usually wear out my opponent with at mix of technique and fierce cardio, but havn’t yet been able to stop my opponent. The fight with Numme will probably also go some distance and maybe all the distance. I’ve worked a lot on my striking game so hopefully I’ll find the opening for my first KO.
