Anderson Silva has lowered fighters’ standards

Posted 27 Oct 2008 in Anderson Silva, Patrick Cote

Just surviving a round or two with Anderson Silva is good enough these days and warrants a hearty handshake and pat on the back. Patrick Cote was excited about hanging in the 2 rounds and change he did with Silva, and he should be. Most were impressed he was able to do well against the Brazilian, as many expected impending doom for Cote less than a minute into the fight.

It’s a testament to the dominance Silva has shown in the division. He hasn’t been pushed past two rounds, and has finished all his opponents in the UFC. Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin (part 2) and Travis Lutter took him into the second stanza, but nobody aside from Cote has driven him into the third in the UFC. While he fought to win but didn’t, Cote still walks away with a moral victory in hanging in over 10 minutes with Silva. Indeed the three fingers Cote flashed to the crowd with glee was a testament to the fact that even though he lost the first two rounds against Silva and wasn’t able to use one of his legs properly, he was excited that he was still in the fight and proved a lot of people wrong just by still being there.

These days as long as you fight Anderson Silva and don’t get totally massacared, you’ve done a great job in the cage.  Now let’s see if somebody can go into the 4th. or even the distance. If they do they might be given an honorary replica belt.
