The case for Randy Couture at UFC 91 vs Brock Lesnar

Posted 26 Oct 2008 in Brock Lesnar, Randy Couture, ufc 91
  1. Experience. Couture is a wiley veteran of the sport. He has pretty much seen it all in the Octagon. Couture has fought more in certain fights than Lesnar has in his whole career. This counts for a lot and will be the overwhelming factor in leading him to victory.
  2. Striker. Couture is a better striker. He has had experience refining his Muay Thai and boxing over the years. He can now strike for striking sake as opposed to just for takedowns.
  3. BJJ advantage. Brock Lesnar is a BJJ novice, Randy Couture has worked to actually be effective and score subs on the ground. He has the edge here.
  4. Having fought the distance. This ties into experience. Couture has fought the full 5 rounds and many championship fights. He’s been into deep waters and knows what it is like to do so. Lesnar should be fine if it goes into the championship rounds 4 and 5, but you never really know what it is like in a real fight until you experience it. In the gymyou can train for it but to be there with a cagey vet like Couture 20-25 minutes into a bout is a whole different game.
