Jon Fitch on training for Georges St. Pierre fight at UFC 87

“Here at AKA, we’ve been putting in a lot of long hours and as usual I’ve got a great team to work with. A lot of guys from other gyms fight their fight, take off for a while, and they don’t worry about training again until it’s their time to fight again. I’ve got (Josh) Koscheck, Josh Thomson and other guys coming back pretty soon after they’ve fought. Phil Baroni’s back in town, and you’ve got these guys rotating in on you. Instead of fighting just one guy for five rounds, you’re fighting five or ten guys for five rounds. So you continuously have fresh guys coming in, and they’re giving you looks, and trying to mimic and do the types of things I think GSP is gonna do so you get used to seeing those things and on fight night you’re not surprised.”

Roger Huerta many training camps for UFC 87 bout with Kenny Florian

“I flew to Denver, Colorado last week to train with Trevor Wittman. I’m here training with one of the best boxing coaches there is. I came here a week before Nate (Marquardt) fought in London to help him before his fight, and at the same time I got to know Trevor, who did some mitt work with me and helped me out. I fell in love with his training methods and his work as a striking coach and I knew that I had found my boxing coach. So I’m out here now and learning from him. I’ll be here until the 13th of July, and then we’ll all head down to New Mexico to work with Greg Jackson and Georges St-Pierre, and Nate will be coming down as well.

Before going to Denver, I trained with (Muay Thai coach) Phil Nurse for a week and a half in New York and I learned a lot of stuff from him. Right after that I went to Montreal and trained with Georges for about a week and trained with Dennis Kang for a day. I’ve also been training with Jonathan Chaimberg, who is Georges’ strength and conditioning coach, and when I was in LA recently, I trained with Justin Hagen, who was my strength and conditioning coach for the last year.”

Fighting Words: UFC champion Georges St. Pierre on fighting with his heart

I never fight with my anger, I fight with my heart. I don’t carry anger during the fight, I fight with my heart. The way I fight it’s purely mechanic, if you do something I’m going to react. I try not to let my emotion go, sometimes it can be good because I use it to finish strong and stay pumped up at the end and give me the adrenaline rush. But let’s say at the beginning of the fight, I try to make the fight mechanical, because I don’t want to let my emotion go and make some mistake and get caught on something. That’s my mentality of fighting, that’s the way I approach a fight. Some guys do it differently and I respect that, but in my case that’s the way it works the best.

Jon Fitch fine with fighting BJ Penn after GSP at UFC 87

Jon Fitch: ” I’m fine with fighting BJ after I win this fight! My only thing is if BJ moves up in weight, he should have to give up his lightweight belt because Ive been in that position before where I had to sit and wait for a year for a title shot while all of the other bullcrap that was going on with the top guys with the belt, you know? It’s not fair to the other 55 pounders.”

Georges St. Pierre’s latest blog: talks Patrick Cote and UFC 87

“Congrats to my good friend and training partner Patrick Cote on his victory on the weekend to become the number one contender. I’m really looking forward to his next fight. I want to thank all the fans who came out to the event I hosted at La Cage aux Sports on Saturday (in Montreal)–I had a great time! My training camp is my best so far. I feel great, very powerful, explosive and totally injury free. It’s been awesome having Stephen Thompson in town–he’s a great sparring partner. ”

Jon Fitch receives BJJ blackbelt while training for GSP fight at UFC 87

“One of the highlights of training last week was receiving my Black Belt in Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu from Dave Camarillo. If you’re wondering how Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu differs from other forms of the art, it’s much more aggressive and much more applicable to the fight game. Dave is all about finishing opponents; not controlling and outpointing opponents.”
