Karo Parisyan to train with Georges St. Pierre

Karo Parisyan will evidently be training with fellow welterweight and current UFC champion Georges St. Pierre. The two tangled once before in the UFC with GSP taking the decision. While Parisyan was on the track to title contention he was temporarily derailed by Thiago Alves. Georges St. Pierre trains his boxing, BJJ and wrestling individually in Montreal but puts it all together for MMA training with Greg Jackson in New Mexico.

Early stoppage for Parisyan?

The stoppage of the Thiago Silva/Karo Parisyan bout looked like a bit of an early one last night. It’s always a difficult job for the referee to make a split second decision, but after careful review after the fact, and 20-20 hindsight, it looks a bit premature. It certainly wasn’t a terrible call, or horribly inaccurate stoppage, but Parisyan has shown extremely solid ability to recover after being rocked. Case in point, when Matt Serra dropped him, mounted him and started raining blows down on the Armenian welterweight, Parisyan hung in there and fought back for the win. Nonetheless, all this info is tough to deduce in a split second which referee Steve Mazzagati had to work with. But at the same time, you can understand Parisyan’s frustration.

Alves upsets Parisyan

“The Pitbull” Thiago Alves lived up to his nickname and attacked heavily to score a TKO victory over top 10 ranked Karo Parisyan last night in Denver. A big knee dropped Parisyan and Alves went in for more strikes on the ground. While the bout was stopped by the ref, Parisyan protested the stoppage. Alves disagrees about Parisyan’s remarks on the prematurity of the stoppage. “I think it was stopped perfect”, commented Alves post fight. “If it didn’t stop I’d just keep punching and punching and punching, I don’t thikn the result would change or anything like that, so I think they did a great job.”

Parisyan on Alves

Karo Parisyan’s thoughts on Thiago Alves from a video interview off UFC.com:

“Thiago has nothing to lose, everbody knows he’s fighting Karo and I am the favorite..the deal is yeah I have more pressure than he has I think, I need to beat Thiago to get my title shot…Thiago’s a very very very tough guy, he’s no slouch, I’m just going to try and go after him and try and beat Thiago in a very impressive way so I can get my title shot…”

on Alves’ kicks:

“Walk into the kick and try to take him down, or check it…one way or the other I’m going to get kicked, I just hope it’s not some kind of a kick that’s going to put me down, which if he kicks me he’s going to hurt me and it’s going to get really personal after that. “
