Dana White lauds Mark Cuban, fires back at Gary Shaw

Posted 09 Mar 2008 in Dana White, Gary Shaw, Mark Cuban

Love him or hate him, Dana White will always speak his mind. When asked by the Boston Herald on his views on Mark Cuban of HDnet and Gary Shaw of Elite XC, White said the following:

“We’ll see who’s around in five years, me or Gary Shaw. There’s some ego for you. The reality is I know what the (expletive) I’m doing and Gary Shaw doesn’t. If you go and search Gary Shaw and mixed martial arts (on the Internet), this guy was saying five years ago that mixed martial arts was a joke. (He said) it’s not a real sport, these guys are barroom brawlers. Now that fat, bloated (expletive) is running around acting like he loves mixed martial arts.”

“I don’t dislike Mark Cuban at all,” White said. “He’s a smart guy and he’s made lots of money. … And he’s invested millions and millions of dollars into (HDNet). He thinks that MMA is a hot commodity right now so he’s trying to get viewers. What he wants to do is build HDNet up and then sell it to Comcast or Time Warner or one of the other cable systems. He doesn’t give a (expletive) about mixed martial arts.”

Posted 23 Feb 2008 in Mark Cuban, Vince Mcmahon

In an interview with the Edmonton Sun, Mark Cuban was asked about potentially working with WWE head honcho, Vince Mcmahon.

Q: Are you trying to form an MMA company to rival the UFC? Are you thinking of involving the McMahon family from the WWE?

A: “Absolutely. We are looking to partner where we can, do our own promotions where it makes sense. We think the future is built around the fighters and their personalities. No one else has this focus and partnership approach. We think it’s a winner.”

Battle of Billionaires

With HDnet suing Zuffa and also picking up Randy Couture for their roster, it shows that with Mark Cuban at the helm, they’re willing to fight the UFC dollar for dollar. A quick examination of net worth of Cuban versus the Fertitta brother shows that Cuban is ahead over the Las Vegas casino moguls, at least according to the last Forbes Richest 400 Americans list.

Cuban #133, Net Worth $2.3 billion

Fertita Bros #380, Net Worth $1.3 billion

Mark Cuban talks MMA, UFC and HDNet

Posted 22 Jan 2008 in HDNet Fights, Mark Cuban

The Baltimore Sun recently spoke with Mark Cuban. Some of the blurbs about MMA are as follows:

I recently interviewed UFC president Dana White and he says he respects you as a businessman. What do you think of the job White has done with the UFC?

His success speaks for itself. That said, no business is perfect. It’s hard to grow, expand internationally, keep all your employees happy as new competitors enter the market, keep regulators happy and the list goes on. Challenges change over time. It will be fun to watch him address all of these issues. Plus he has to be concerned over his ratings. If [The Ultimate Fighter] ratings drop materially, his whole game plan will have to change. That won’t be inexpensive or easy.

That said, there is plenty of room for more than one company.

What flaws do you see in the UFC’s game that you think can be exploited?

The biggest is that their contracts don’t adhere to the [Muhammad] Ali [Boxing] Reform Act. There will come a time in the not distant future when they will be required to.

Are you looking to defeat UFC or co-exist with them?

There is plenty of room for multiple companies.

What do you bring to the table that will allow you to overcome the perception that UFC = MMA?

My experience in marketing, technology, pro sports and a vertically integrated entertainment company.

Mayhem looking to avenge at “Reckless Abandon”

In February 2003, Jason “Mayhem” Miller suffered a decision loss to Tim Kennedy at Extreme Challenge 50. He’s looking to make up for that December 15th. “Back in 2003 I lost by decision to Tim Kennedy and now December 15th I’m getting my chance to avenge that loss in the main event of HDNet Fights at the American Airlines Center Dallas, Texas”, notes Miller on his Myspace page. “I was driving down the freeway when I got a text saying, “Look out the window.”  As I looked out, flying along side my truck was a helicopter. Billionaire Mark Cuban hung from a rope holding a contract for an offer for a fight I could not refuse.  I signed on the spot.”

Miller is on a two fight win streak after a defeat at the hands of Frank Trigg in December 2006.

Mark Cuban serious about MMA and Fedor

White Chocolate Management LLC (www.whitecm.com) has announced after being contacted by Mark Cuban’s company HD Net, it has successfully completed high level discussions with Cuban and other members of his organization regarding mixed martial arts. Reed Wallace, founder and President of White Chocolate Management (WCM), Eduardo Borges, Vice President of WCM, and strategic partner Ryan Schinman, President of Platinum Rye Entertainment, met in New York to discuss HD Net with Cuban, as well as his interest in MMA and Fedor Emelianenko, who is represented in the USA by WCM. After the completion of their discussions in New York, the parties reconvened in Dallas for meetings through the weekend with Guy Mezger, one of Cuban’s representatives overseeing MMA operations. Also present for these discussions was Ed Fishman, ex-President of PrideFC-USA. As Mr. Fishman orchestrated several Pride shows in Las Vegas and has arranged for major MMA events to take place in 2008 in China, Macau, Las Vegas, London and other major global destinations, Wallace stated, “it is clear that White Chocolate, Mr. Fishman and Mr. Cuban’s organization are in a position to work together on producing MMA events and developing MMA content.” Currently, Fishman is working with another TV icon for a unique Mixed Martial Arts show which is expected to air in early 2008. As Fishman has been actively involved in the Mixed Martial Arts business, he has been in discussions with major international Mixed Martial Arts athletes and, according to Mr. Wallace, “agrees that Fedor is the most exciting heavyweight fighter in the industry and would be a major asset to any initiative involving MMA events and the Cuban organization.” At the conclusion of the meetings, Wallace was clearly impressed about the potential of Cuban being a part of the sport. “Mr. Cuban has a strong interest in MMA, that he is very serious about Fedor and is entering the Mixed Martial Arts business with very serious partners”, reported Wallace. “Mr. Cuban is widely known to treat his athletes with great respect and care, and there were discussions regarding health insurance and many other areas for supporting MMA athletes and their families.”
