Spike TV’s “UFC Fight Night” Features Demian Maia vs Alan Belcher

Live From Austin, TX On Wednesday, September 15

Mac Danzig And Matt Wiman Re-Match In Co-Feature

New York, NY – Brazilian mixed martial arts star, Demian Maia (12-2) returns to the Octagon® on a quest for another shot at the UFC middleweight crown as he takes on rising contender Alan Belcher (15-5) in Spike TV’s “UFC Fight Night” live from the Frank Erwin Special Events Center on the campus of The University of Texas in Austin on Wednesday, September 15 at 8:00pm ET/PT. Maia most recently engaged in a hard fought five rounder with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 112 in April.

Maia, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt from Sao Paolo, won his first five fights in the UFC, each one via submission against such notables as Chael Sonnen, Jason McDonald, and Nate Quarry. Maia rebounded from a tough knockout loss to Nate Marquardt at UFC 102 last August, with an impressive decision victory over Dan Miller at UFC 109 in February. Filling in for the injured Vitor Belfort, Maia went the distance in a decision loss to Silva in the UFC’s first fight in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates at UFC 112.

Belcher, fighting out of Biloxi, MS, has evolved into one of the sport’s most exciting fighters, winning the “Submission of the Night” in his most recent victory over Patrick Cote at UFC 113 in May and “Fight of the Night” bonus in his two previous fights, a win over Wilson Gouveia at UFC 107 in December and a loss to Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 100 last July. A victory over Maia will elevate Belcher’s chances for a shot at Anderson’s coveted middleweight crown.

In the co-feature, “The Ultimate Fighter 6” champ Mac Danzig (20-8-1) fighting out of Los Angeles, takes on Matt Wiman (12-5) from “The Ultimate Fighter 5,” currently fighting out San Francisco, in a rematch of their bout this past June at UFC 115. In that fight, Wiman was awarded a controversial victory when he told the referee Danzig had passed out while caught in a guillotine choke. However, a conscious Danzig claimed he never actually tapped. The lightweight contenders will settle their score in Spike’s “UFC Fight Night,” with the winner moving up the ranks in the 155lb division.

The Spike telecast will open with a lightweight battle between Cole Miller (16-4) (“The Ultimate Fighter 5” participant) and “The Ultimate Fighter 9” winner Ross Pearson (13-3). Fighting with American Top Team out of Coconut Creek, FL, Miller has won three of his last four UFC contests. His opponent, Pearson, fighting out of Sunderland, England with Team Rough House, is undefeated in three fights in the Octagon.

Also on the televised card will be a lightweight showdown between Jim Miller (17-2) and Gleison Tibau (31-6). The pride of Whippany, NJ, Miller is on a four-fight winning streak and is quickly moving up the 155lb division ranks. Tibau, a Brazilian native who currently trains with American Top Team in Coconut Creek, FL, is coming off of an impressive first round TKO over Caol Uno in March.

New York, NY, May 11, 2010 – Spike TV will telecast live undercard bouts from UFC® 115: LIDDELL vs. FRANKLIN on Saturday, June 12 at 9:00 PM ET/ 6:00 PM PT from the GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. The one-hour telecast will run with limited commercial interruption. UFC 115 will air on pay-per-view at 10:00 PM ET.

The first bout scheduled to air on Spike TV is in the lightweight division, and features a former winner of “The Ultimate Fighter,” as Mac Danzig (20-7-1) squares off against Matt Wiman (11-5). Fighting out Los Angeles, CA, Danzig was the winner of Season 6 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” defeating Tommy Speer to capture the crown. He most recently defeated Justin Buchholz at UFC 109, and he hopes to make it two in a row by defeating Wiman at UFC 115.

Hailing from Dallas, TX, “Handsome” Matt Wiman appeared on Season 5 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” and notched his first win in the UFC at the season finale against Brian Geraghty. He boasts a 5-3 record inside the UFC Octagon™, with wins over Thiago Tavares and Shane Nelson on his resume, as well as a Fight of The Night battle against Sam Stout. Widely respected for his toughness, Wiman hopes to emerge from his bout with Danzig with his hand raised, and still “Handsome.”

The evening’s second televised bout is also a lightweight contest, and pits rising star Evan Dunham (10-0) against longtime contender Tyson Griffin (14-2). Training with Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Dunham has won his first three contests in the UFC against Per Eklund, Marcus Aurelio and Efrain Escudero. Compiling an undefeated record in the UFC, with only two bouts going to decision, Dunham will be looking to use his effective mixture of striking and grappling ability to take out his toughest opponent to date, his teammate Tyson Griffin.

Tyson Griffin has defeated an impressive roster of opponents en route to his 7-2 record with the organization, including wins over the likes of Clay Guida, Hermes Franca and Gleison Tibau. With his aggressive striking, he is also widely known as one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC, having captured “Fight of the Night” honors five times during his career. He’ll look to make it a sixth time with a victory over Dunham.

Other bouts on the card might air on Spike TV, to be determined by the length of the fights.

This Day in MMA History: Roger Huerta defeats Matt Wiman

On September 14, 2005, Roger Huerta defeated Matt Wiman in the Freestyle Fighting Championship via unanimous decision.

Top 3 Flying Knee KOs in Recent History

It’s one of the most explosive strikes in the sport of MMA– The Flying Knee. A fighter goes airborne and lands a brutal strike that is either going to daze his opponent badly or finish him off completely. Here are 3 Flying Knee KOs which stand out in recent memory.

Spencer Fisher over Matt Wiman

At UFC 60 Fisher had a serious vertical on this flying knee and landed it in explosive fashion to knockout UFC rookie Wiman as a welcome into the UFC.

Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto over Kazuyuki Miyata

A 4 second flying knee knockout, it doesn’t get much better than that. Yamamoto literally ran across the ring in a second and flying kneed Miyata in grandiose fashion.

James Irvin over Terry Martin

Irvin was evidently anxious to finish the fight in round 2–he took only 9 seconds to leap in the air and land a pristine flying knee on Martin, which knocked him out cold. Irvin embodied the power of visualization as he envisioned this KO numerous times before the fight and materialized it perfectly. Irvin coolly walked away after the strike as he knew the bout was over.
