Fighting Words: UFC’s Chuck Liddell on conditioning

I could punch and had natural power, but I had no idea yet how strong I was or what my best attributes as a fighter were. But conditioning has nothing to do with natural talent. It’s all about heart and determination and want, wanting to train longer and harder and better than anyone else so you can stand in the middle of that cage for as long as possible.

Wanting to win because the alternative is so goddamn embarrassing. Losing a fight because you ran out of steam is cowardice. It means you didn’t have the guts to push yourself when no one was watching, when the foundation was laid for what would become your legacy as a fighter.

I say just be relaxed. If you can fight in the ring or the cage the same way you do in the dojo with no stress and everything is relaxed, you probably will win if you fight your best. But the difficult thing is when you get in the ring, your friends, your family, TV, everybody is there. Suddenly there’s a lot of pressure on you. To get rid of that, you have to set your mind. –Former UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten ______________________________ o r i g i n a l M M A a p p a r e l Desi Fighter Apparel for MMA, with roots from India, Available HERE

Fighting Words: UFC champion Forrest Griffin on controlling all the variables you can

“The thing I always say is control all the variables you can control, don’t worry about the rest”, says Griffin. “There’s a little prayer they give to the druggies and alcoholics, ‘God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.’ Yeah I live by that.”

Fighting Words: UFC champ Forrest Griffin on being in the moment during fighting

Fighting in general I got into because for that 5 minutes nothing matters. I don’t matter if you got your girlfriend pregnant, it don’t matter if you’re late with the mortgage, it don’t matter about the speeding ticket you got–nothing matters. You can’t think about anything for however long you’re in there or for that day except that you’r going in there in some cage with some other fellow that’s trying to fight you and that immediacy takes over. There’s no other words. Your bills, your stress, your job at home, your old lady bitching at you, it fades in comparison.

Fighting Words: Kenny Florian on constant and never-ending improvement

People think that, “Oh, Kenny’s getting better all the time”, well, wait until they see the next fight, and the fight after that, and the fight after that. It’s never going to stop.

Fighting Words: Roger Huerta on confidence for UFC 87 vs Kenny Florian

I’ve heard that there were a lot of comments about my pre-fight video interview on the UFC 87 website where I say that I’m never going to lose. Well, I’m not gonna lose. I’ve had that attitude my entire life. Going through what I’ve gone through and being where I’m at today, and having that goal of being the best in the world, it’s something that never crosses my mind. Why would anyone go into a fight thinking ‘I’m gonna lose this fight?’ If you feel that way, why go in there in the first place? In life, are you gonna give up on yourself? How can you? I’m in survival mode, and in there there’s no chance that I’m gonna let him beat me. So if you want to face me, you have to pretty much face that you’re going to lose the fight and somehow cope with that. However Kenny wants to take it, that’s fine. I’ve got nothing to hide – I train hard, I’m very disciplined and focused, and very confident in what I do.

Fighting Words: UFC’s Chuck Liddell on not fighting with emotion

I am not an emotional fighter; I don’t have to not like you to fight you. If you step in the ring I am going to try to take your head off.
