Unlike most television series which suffer ratings decline as they get older, the ratings for “The Ultimate Fighter” are like fine wine, getting better with age. The season nine premiere of “The Ultimate Fighter: U.S. vs. U.K.” on Wednesday, April 1 drew its highest rating in Men 18-49 since Season 4 (August, 2006) and its most watched season premiere since Season 5 (April, 2007). The episode also drew more Men 18-34 and 18-49 than anything else on cable in its timeslot (10:15-11:15pm ET/PT), besting all sports competition including the NBA on ESPN.

Overall, the series drew a 1.8 in M18-49, a 2.1 in M18-34, a 2.7 in M25-34, and an average audience of 1.8 million viewers.

This season, the two “Ultimate Fighter” teams are divided based on nationality, with eight mixed martial artists from Great Britain and eight from the United States. “The Ultimate Fighter 3” champion and top middleweight contender Michael Bisping coaches the Brits, and former concurrent PRIDE champion of the 185 lbs and 205 lbs divisions and U.S. Olympian Dan Henderson, coaches the U.S. squad.

Prior to the season premiere of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Spike TV aired the first-ever live UFC fight from Nashville, TN headlined by welterweights Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann. The “UFC Fight Night” delivered 1.9 million viewers and, like “The Ultimate Fighter,” drew more Men 18-34 and 18-49 than anything in its timeslot (8:00-10:15pm ET/PT).

Overall, the “UFC Fight Night” delivered a 1.7 among M18-49, a 2.1 for M18-34, a 2.7 in M25-34, and attracted an average audience of 1.9 million viewers

Why do you fight?
I fight because it’s something I love doing and get paid for it. Plus I hate 9 to 5 work. I feel as though I am meant for something more.

How’d you get into the game?
I went to help a friend out by holding some pads as he was teaching a self defense class at Leicester, Shootfighters, that’s where I met Paul Daley and Dan Hardy–they were doing well in their fights and we are similar ages, I thought to myself if they can do it so can I. Nathan Leverton, the coach from Lei Shoot saw some potential in me and took me under his wing.

How would you describe your fighting style?
I am an all rounder but I like to strike either in the clinch or at range.

What’s your best strengths as a fighter?
My strengths are being able to control how the fight goes, plus I am mentally strong.

What has been your most memorable moment so far in the sport?
Most memorable moments so far would be getting to the TUF, defending my FX3 title against Mario Stapel and my second semi pro fight where I damaged my ACL and popped my knee out; I still managed to win the fight.
What part of your personality shines through the most when you fight?
I think my composure comes through when I fight but you would have to ask the people that watch, they would probably be a better judge.

What are your short term and long term goals?
My sort term goals are to improve my skills as a fighter, hopefully get to and win the final in the TUF. My long term goals are to be the UFC champ and be rich enough to live a comfortable life for myself and those close to me.

What have you learned about yourself through MMA?
I don’t think I’ve learned anything new about myself but just reinforced what I knew already which is I am a very competitive and determined person.

What life lessons have you learned through being involved in the sport?
Anything can happen at anytime, also to always go in to the fight and do your best and leave the cage with no regrets.

Quote you live by?
Hard work pays.

What’s the most interesting experience you had meeting a pro fighter?
I don’t really have any interesting stories that come to mind but I have had a lot of jokes and fun nights out with Paul Daley.

Any tips for new fighters?
My tips for new fighters would be train hard, do your best and be realistic with where you want to take it as a career.
