ANTONIO RODRIGO NOGUEIRA
BORN: Vitória da Conquista, Brazil
6’3, heavyweight
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is arguably the great heavyweight submission artist of all time for the sport of mixed martial arts. The Brazilian was a master in Pride FC, and one of their most beloved champions.
Nogueira was not just a great sub master, but could use some effective strikes on the feet and ground to accomplish his task of winning bouts. He was on one heck of a roll from 2000-2002 as he racked up 12 straight wins and was lighting up the scene in Japan.
One of the most durable fighters at heavyweight, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is the master of being able to take a beating but still wind up on top. The Brazilian has certainly doled out beating of his own, but some of his most remarkable wins came from the come from behind gut wrenching fights where he showed immense championship heart.
His fight with Bob Sapp was incredible. Sapp was tossing around and pounding Nogueira all around the Pride ring. The bout began with Sapp powerbombing Nogueira on his head after the Brazilian shot in on his gigantic adversary. Despite all the pounding, Nogueira found a way to turn things around and win the fight via armbar. An incredible display of heart and technique all wrapped into one.
The durability of Nogueira and heart was also displayed when he was able to take out the then unstoppable Mirko Filipovic. At the time Filipovic was the most feared heavyweight in the game, and was KOing opponents one by one. It appeared Nog was next on the list as the Croatian was belting out fists and brutal kicks to the face and body of the Brazilian. Nog’s takeodwns were all being pushed away but in round 2 he finally willed a takedown on Filipovic. Moments later an armbar victory was earned by Nogueira. It was another great display of sheer heart and amazing technique.
Nogueira pulled off the same heroics against Tim Sylvia, as he endured a good beating for 2 plus rounds, before finally getting Sylvia in a guillotine choke. He then became a UFC champion to add to his collection of belts.
Nogueira has been one of the most well rounded heavyweights in the world. He was a BJJ fighter morphed into a complete machine for MMA. He had a solid chin, intense heart, good boxing, excellent BJJ, good wrestling and constantly learning. His fight with Randy Couture showed he could do everything quite well. We all knew he could strike and use BJJ, but against a top level wrestler like Couture, who is quite well rounded himself, Nogueira looked in fantastic form and scored an impressive decision win.
A killer in the cage, but a gentleman outside, Nogueira has inspired thousands of fans around the world. Many learned BJJ and MMA because of their strong fanaticism for Nogueira. He’s inspired numerous champions and will do the same for future champions in the game.
