MMA Fighter Bios: DAN SEVERN
DAN SEVERN
BORN: Coldwater, Michigan
6’2, heavyweight
51 and going strong, with over 110 fights in his career, Dan Severn is an inspiration to fighters across the world. He’s an amazing person who has displayed wonderful longevity in the game. While he isn’t out there taking on the top dogs in the game, Severn is getting in a good 3-4 fights a year, and actually fought 9 times in 2007. He has more draws (7) than some competitors have fought when entering into top organizations including the UFC.
A four time All-American at Arizona State, Severn is arguable the first world-class wrestler to enter into the UFC. Severn entered the game at UFC 4 in 1994 and worked his way to the finals of the tournament after two solid wins. Unfortunately the American ran into the then juggernaut that was Royce Gracie, but “The Beast” was born and he wasn’t about to stop after a final setback from Brazil
Severn charged back at UFC 5 and won the tournament in style. He defeated Joe Charles, Oleg Taktarov and Dave Beneteau to become the king at UFC 5. He was involved in the first superfight versus Ken Shamrock, in which he came short. But once again Severn showed his championship heart and skill by defeating Paul Varelans, Tank Abbott and Oleg Taktarov at Ultimate Ultimate 1995.
Severn would go onto fight regularly outside of the UFC for promotions including Superbrawl, King of the Cage among other smaller organizations, including his own MMA outfit—Dangerzone. Severn would fight over 90 times over the next dozen years, including one bout in the UFC, which was a defeat via Pedro Rizzo leg kicks. But along the ride, Severn would muster up some wins over up and coming stars early in their careers including Paul Buentello, Forrest Griffin, Dan Christison and the late Justin Eilers
One of the fighters who helped shape the early evolution of the game, showed an intense determination and dominance in the early UFCs, and has been able to display tremendous amounts of courage, dedication and longevity in the game, Severn is a pioneer of the sport and a very valuable asset to mixed martial arts. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame at UFC 52 in 2005.
