MMA Fighter Bios: KEN SHAMROCK

KEN SHAMROCK

BORN: Macon, Georgia
6’0, 205 pounds

The first UFC Superfight Champion (now heavyweight), first MMA heavyweight champ in Japan, and one of pioneers of MMA and it’s evolution, Ken Shamrock is one of the most recognizable figures in the game.
Defeating Japanese MMA legend Masakatsu Funkaki in his debut, Shamrock was a standout in Pancrase and would go on to defeat Funanki again as well as Maurice Smithi, Manabu Yamada and took home the first championship in Pancrase in 1994. He defended his belt against Bas Rutten in 1995, tapping out the Dutchman via kneebar.
While his success in Japan was tremendous, the creation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship drew Shamrock to compete and he would 3 of his 4 fights there, only losing to Royce Gracie. But in 1995 he’d get a rematch in a bout which ended as a draw, due to no judges being utilized at the time, but most easily agreed Shamrock won the fight as much of it took place on the ground with Shamrock landing strikes in Gracie’s closed guard.
Shamrock would be pitted against Dan Severn at UFC 6 to determine the UFC’s first champion. The “superfight” championship would eventually become the heavyweight strap years later. Shamrock would win the battle with Severn via guillotine and be considered by many as the top MMA fighter in the world with the newly formed Superfight title around his waist.
With Royce Gracie leaving the UFC, Shamrock was matched up with UFC 5 champion Dan Severn at UFC 6 to determine the champion of the UFC. The ‘superfight’, a match presented as a fight between the “best of the best”, was now the match that would determine the UFC champion, and the tournament winners would now be considered the #1 contender for the newly created UFC Superfight Championship, the first single world MMA championship outside of Japan. The Superfight title would later be renamed the UFC Heavyweight Championship when weight categories were introduced to the UFC. The Superfight title was created for the UFC 5 Superfight between Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie, but since the match ended in a draw, the title remained vacant.
Shamrock defended his belt at UFC 7 against Oleg Taktarov, and once again at UFC 8 against Kimo Leopaldo. But at UFC 9 Shamrock would lose his title to Dan Severn, when “The Beast” won a split decision over Shamrock. The fight instituted a last minute change of rules due to the District Attorney of Michigan trying to prevent the UFC from holding the event in Michigan and forcing a rule change–no closed fisted strikes to the head and no headbutts with the threat of arrest looming should they break the rules.
After defeating Brian Johnston in the UFC, Shamrock would take a break from MMA and do pro wrestling work for the WWE, before returning with an impressive win 4 years later in Pride against Alexander Otsuka. But the game was rapidly changing and Shamrock was not able secure dominance over the new breed of hybrid MMA fighters who refined past techniques, and learned much from the history Shamrock and others laid down before them. Shamrock will go down as one of the best fighters in his day, pioneers of the game who helped shape and evolve the sport, and allowed others to learn along the way. Ken Shamrock was the first inductee into the UFC hall of fame, along with Royce Gracie.
