MMA Fighter Bios: MIGUEL TORRES
MIGUEL TORRES
BORN: East Chicago, Indiana
5’9, Bantamweight
Miguel Torres is a big problem for a 135er. He amassed a 20-0 record fighting bantamweights and taking them out with submission after submission, peppered with a knockout or two for good measure. His only loss came to fellow 135er Ryan Ackerman. But Torrest was back on the horse again and at the top soon enough.
For a number of years Torres fought primarily in small, unsanctioned events held in Northwest Indiana nightclubs and bars. As a result, much of his early fighting career is undocumented. Prior to signing with the WEC, he fought often on Chicago-area shows, including the Total Fight Challenge and the Ironheart Crown. He held the bantamweight title in both of these organizations for several years, and his participation in those events is well documented.
He stringed together 13 straight wins, with choke after choke, from rear nakes, to triangles, to guillotines. And was even able to score an armbar to avenge his only loss to Ryan Ackerman in the process. The WEC jumped at the chance to sign Torres and he became the WEC bantamweight title holder after defeating Chase Beebe. Ultra well-rounded, amazing BJJ, good striking, great aggression, super cardio, and an intense will two in, Torres was firing on all cylinders. He defeated Yoshiro Maeda, Manny Tapia, Takeya Mizugaki, to defend his belt 4 times, and score 17 straight wins. His ultra hot streak and talent was undeniable, and even prompted part-time WEC commentator and 2 time UFC champ Frank Mir to state he felt Torres was the pound for pound best fighter in the world.
A knockout loss has temporarily set back the Mexican-American fighter, but the last time he was defeated he came back strong 17 times. We wouldn’t expect anything less from Torres though, he has such a strong drive to win which allows his immense talent to be fully displayed in the cage. When he’s signed on to fight an opponent, there’s an immediate shift in his persona when it comes to training. He’s super-dedicated, ultra focused and can take opponents in a variety of devastating ways. And amassed a spectacular record indicative of a real champion.
