PAT MILETICH
BORN: Davenport, Iowa
5’10, 170
Pat Miletich also wanted to be a world champion at something. MMA was an option in this dream, but was actually to help support his mother pay her bills for a heart problem which drew Miletich to compete in pro MMA fights. After training locally in various martial arts and boxing, Miletich came across Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and began rounding out his entire game, which already had a solid wrestling base through competing in junior college in Iowa.
Miletich’s foray in MMA in 1995 seemed to be a great idea, he racked up a 15-0 record competing in the Midwest and was becoming legend in the area already. After a TKO loss via doctor stoppage to Matt Hume, Miletich bounced by and was undefeated in his next 7 bouts, which included a draw against heavyweight Dan Severn.
In 1998 a chance to fight for the UFC welteweight belt presented itself to Miletich, and he defeated Mikey Burnett to win the title. He defeated against Brazilian Jorge Patino, but was deefeated by triangle choke in a about outside of the UFC in Hawaii a month later to Japanese fighter Jutaro Nakao one month later, however would defeat Clayton Miller to get back on track. Miletich’s second title defence in the UFC was a win via cut over Andre Pederneiras. He would defeat Shonie Carter, once again outside the UFC, as well drop a bout to Jose Landi-Jons in early 2000. But in the UFC Miletich was still golden. He defended his title two more times, and was running a successful camp out of Iowa himself, which was generating and honing solid fight talent. But at UFC 31 in 2001, Miletich was defeated by Carlow Newton via submission, and he lost his belt in his 5th defense. After being defeated by Matt Lindland via strikes on the ground at UFC 36, Miletich retired from the sport due to a severe neck injury.
Despite not competing for a four year period, Miletich would still be at the top of the coaching game by way of his gym where he served as head coach, and generated championship including Matt Hughes, Tim Sylvia, Jens Pulver, in addition to fighters such as Jeremy Horn and Robbie Lawler.
The itch to compete was too much for Miletich, and he returned to the cage in 2006 but was tapped out by Renzo Gracie. However in late 2008 Miletich returned to action and scored an impressive knockout victory over Thomas Denny, and showed that his 40 year old body was still able to generate some tremendous power and technique in the MMA world.
An extremely well rounded fighter, very tactical and methodical, intelligent when it came to gameplanning and execution, Miletich was the first welterweight champ in the UFC and a 4 time defending one on top of that honor.
