MMA Fighter Bios: PAULO FILHO
PAULO FILHO
BORN: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
5’8, 183 pounds
Master of the armbar, submission specialist turned solid MMA fighter, Paulo Filho has been perfect his entire career, aside from one decision loss. Despite the punishment dished out to him, Filho is always ready to turn things around and bring it to his world—the ground. Once the fight hits the mat it’s either a matter of time before he’ll catch you or he’ll win by decision if his opponent survives.
From 2000 to 2002, Filho took out Brazilian Luiz Claudio das Dores, in addition to Japanese fighters Keichiro Yamamiya, Ikuhisa Minowa, Yuki Kondo and Akira Shoji. All his opponents in Pride were defeated as Akira Shoji went down again via decision to Filho, as well as Amar Suloev, Ryuta Sakurai and Murilo “Ninja” Rua.
Filho had a chance to compete at the PRIDE 2006 Welterweight Grand Prix, and defeated Gregory Bouchelaghem, Ryo Chonan and Kazuo Misaki in the 2006 Pride Welterweight Grand Prixe, but a knee injury forced him out of the chance of winning the tournament.
As Pride was dissolved into the UFC’s parent company Zuffa, Filho left the organization with an overall record of 14-0 and an 8-0 record in Pride. He signed with the WEC and fought for the vacant middleweight title in the summer of 2007 and defeated Joe Doerksen in the first round. He defended his title once against American Chael Sonnen.
As the WEC Middleweight division was absorbed into the UFC in late 2008, Filho looked to fight in DREAM and made his debut the next year against superstar striker Melvin Manhoef. Taking loads of punishment from Manhoef in the feet, Filho showed an excellent chin, tremendous conditioning and ability to persevere and win as he took the fight to the ground and tapped out his Dutch opponent via armbar in the first round.
Filho has been a superbly consistent performer, and shows that solid Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can still be an incredible base for MMA if you round out all your skills, have an iron will to win, and come in solid conditioning.
