MMA Fighter Bios: SEAN SHERK
SEAN SHERK
BORN: St. Francis, Minnesota
5’6, lightweight
At 33-4-1, Sean Sherk, a decade veteran of the sport, has put together one of the most impressive records in MMA. His losses only coming to 3 of the greatest champs of the sport in BJ Penn, Georges St. Pierre, Matt Hughes, as well as a loss to the very talented and highly touted Frankie Edgar.
Sherk is a very determined athlete and his whole career sought to one day be a UFC champion. His discipline when it comes to training, dieting and working hard to achieve his goals is well documented and highly respected in the industry. Training hard and strong up until the day of the fight, Sherk gets very antsy and uncomfortable if he ever should miss a workout. He never relies on luck and gets things down to a complete science when preparing for a bout.
8 straight wins get him a shot in the UFC, and hedefeated Tiki Ghosn in his UFC debut. After taking out Manvel Gamburyan an 3 more fighters, he’d return to the Octagon and defat Jutaro Nakao and Benji Radach. After winning another bout and being 17-0-1, Sherk finally got a shot at his dream–fighting for the UFC belt, against Matt Hughes. Unfortunately for Sherk, Hughes would pick up a decision win in a hard fought 25 minute fight. It was very disheartening for Sherk, who suffered his first loss, and didn’t obtain the UFC belt. But he would continue winning outside of the UFC 9 times and eventually get a crack back in their organization. Georges St. Pierre however would be able to stop “The Muscle Shark” and Sherk was considering moving down to lighweight. It was a tough for Sherk, who was having trouble paying the bill through fighting and temporarily did leave the sport to support his family through working in the hardwood flooring business. But after being reassured by his manager Monte Cox that he had a bright future in MMA still, Sherk would keep plugging away in search of winning a UFC belt. He fought his last bout at 170 in defeating Nick Diaz, and then got a shot at the UFC lightweight championship, and made the most of the opportunity with a decision win over Kenny Florian.
Spending much of the fight with a big cut dripping onto his grounded opponent Florian, Sherk keep persevering and didn’t allow the gash get in the way of winning the belt and fulfilling his dream. A successful defense of the belt against Hereme Franca was marred by a positive test for a banned substance after the bout, and led to Sherk being stripped of the belt. Sherk still continues to fight strong at 155 and has no plans of leaving any time soon in search of UFC gold once again.
