After surveying numerous people across the online MMA landscape, not many are super pumped up to watch this fight. It’s not the most marquee matchup at all for a pay per view headliner that the UFC has put on, but Randy Couture versus Mark Coleman is still a fight I would watch and enjoy. Both are former champs and exceptional wrestlers. Much is still being made about their respective ages, being well into their 40s and having a combined age of over 90. Nonetheless it’s pretty impressive that these two UFC hall of famers are still going strong and doing well in their division. Couture edge out Brandon Vera in his last outing and Coleman defeated Stephan Bonnar last time out. So while it’s not the sexiest of main events the Ultimate Fighting Championship can put on, it’s still a battle that will bring some intrigue.
Any time 2 great wrestlers take on each other you might see some crafty display of grappling technique. But just as often the two mat veterans can cancel out their wrestling skill, thwart each others’ takedown attempts, and turn the bout into a pure standup affair. Oftentimes they just seem to agree to stand up on the feet and duke it out.
This bout may likely come down to who the better striker is and who is in better condition, and that would have to be Randy Couture on both ends. I think Couture has the edge in the striking area and can outlast Coleman should the bout go into the final round and it proves to be a very intensely grueling battle. If it turns out to be a fight with a lot of scrambles, much clinch work and positions which require a load of muscular endurance work, Couture seems to shine brightly in those affairs.
You’ve got to go with “The Natural”, I suspect he’ll either win a unanimous decision over score a finish in the third stanza.
